Overview of the Medical School

  • Lancaster University Medical School was established in 2006 in the city of Lancaster in Lancashire, England.
  • It is a part of the Faculty of Health and Medicine, found in Furness College in Lancaster University campus in Bailrigg, south of the city centre.
  • Lancaster Medical School offers a MBChB and is currently the UK’s newest public medical school with the first cohort graduating in 2011.
  • Lancaster previously was a satiellite medical school utilising the curriculum from the University of Liverpool. Lancaster Medical School gained independence from the General Medical Council in November 2012. The first cohort of to be awarded a Lancaster MBChB will graduate in 2017.

Campus and Facilities

Lancaster University Campus:

  • Lectures commonly are located in the three lecture theatres in Furness College, or in the Management School located in Grizedale College.
  • Faculty of Health and Medicine
  • Clinical Anatomy Learning Centre (CALC)
  • Clinical Skills Corner, where medical students can practice clinical skills on campus, is also found within CALC.
  • Study Spaces include recently redeveloped Lancaster University Library and the Learning Zone (>1200 workspaces and 37 Study Pods) and CALC, which is opened 24 hours and is exclusively for studies of the faculty.

MBChB Programme Information

General Overview

  • Lancaster Medical School uses a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum.

Number of students on the course

  • There are 54 places per year. 4 of these places are reserved for international students.

Course Structure and Length

  • Year 1 (Foundation of Medicine) comprises pre-clinical lectures and PBL sessions which are primarily based at the University. There are 11 PBL Modules (two weeks each in length) which cover the anatomy and physiology of each system. There are weekly anatomy sessions in CALC and clinical skills sessions at the nearby Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI). In addition, there are fortnightly communication skills sessions. After Christmas, following formative assessments, students undertake a 4-week Special Study Module (SSM1).
  • Year 2 (Learning to Diagnose and Manage Illness 1) is the first clinical year where students spend two days a week in hospital undertaking Medicine and Surgery placements and one day in the community, usually at a GP practice. The following two days a week are spent at the university campus for PBL, lectures and CALC teaching. Clinical Placements are split evenly between the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) in Lancaster and Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow-in-Furness. The University provide transport to FGH. Students also have a 4-week SSM2 block.
  • Year 3 (Learning to Diagnose and Manage Illness 2) is a clinical year comprises 7 week rotations around the specialties; Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Care of the Elderly, General Practice). Placements are either at the RLI, FGH or at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital (BVH). A student-led SSM3 is taken place during this year. Professionalism and ethics coursework takes place during this year.
  • Year 4 (Learning to Diagnose and Manage Illness 3) is a clinical year where students spent at least three days per week in hospital and one day in general practice. There are two 16-week blocks (Medicine/Surgery and Specialties) which cover the majority of the curriculum. An audit comprises SSM4 and there is also Psychology and Sociology coursework during the first-half of the year. Students sit their final examinations at the end of Year 4. Placements take place between RLI and FGH (accommodation provided). Following the sitting of Final exams, students go on their elective.
  • Intercalation – if a student would like to intercalate (either internally or at another university) then this is an option after the completion of Year 4.
  • Year 5 (Apprenticeship-style, intensive clinical experience) is a purely clinical year where students undertake five clinical attachments. Two of these are placements chosen by the students (Selectives in Advanced Medical Practice – SAMPS). The other placements include community placement in GP, A&E and a general ward placement. Each attachment lasts seven weeks and the year is assessed via a portfolio. Attachments take place at the RLI, FGH (accommodation provided) and the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (accommodation provided).

  • Lancaster University also run campus tours throughout the year (usually twice a week) which you can also register for via the website.

Summer Term:
  • 20 April 2018 to 29 June 2018

Medical Students from Year 2 onwards have longer term dates and start their studies in late August or early September.

Application process

  • Meet the entry requirements
  • Ensure that you have sat the BMAT
  • Make an online application via UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), by of the 15 October in the year prior to the expected entry to the medical school.

Entry requirements

Academic qualifications

A-Level:

  • AAA(b) with Chemistry and Biology required at A2
  • Applications are considered from applicants who have taken three years to achieve three years to achieve the required A-levels. Resitting applicants must have achieved AAB or ABB during their first attempt in the absence of mitigating circumstances.

GCSE:

  • Top nine subjects scored with a minimum score of 15 required.
  • A*/A = 2, B = 1
  • At least a B grade required in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Language and Mathematics.
  • Applicants with a score of 12-14 may be considered if already attained AAA at A-Level.

International Baccalaureate:

  • 36 points overall to include: Biology, Chemistry and one other subject at Higher Level. all at a minimum of six points
  • Three subjects at Standard Level all at a minimum of five points.

Graduate:

  • A minimum of an Upper 2nd Class honours degree (transcript marks of 65% or higher) either in: A biological or health science subject, with A-level grades of BBB
  • Any degree subject with minimum A-level grades of AAB(b) with Biology and Chemistry at A-grade.

Other qualifications:

  • IELTS (minimum score of 7.0 with no component less than 7.0)
  • Pearson PTE (at least 70 overall and at least 70 in each communicative skill sub-set)
  • Applicants from outside the UK/English not first language must demonstrate English language proficiency before application.

Non-academic criteria:

  • Applicants must demonstrate suitable evidence of:
  • Relevant work experience – what have you done to establish that medicine is the right career path for you?
  • Insight into a medical career and your suitability, drawn from your work (and voluntary) experience.
  • An understanding of the NHS constitution and core values, reflecting on work and voluntary experiences to discuss their relevance and importance and
  • A commitment to society; working for the benefit of others, including voluntary work or significant caring roles
  • Effective written communication skills: a coherent, well-structured personal statement.

Candidate Selection

All candidates follow the same application pathway:

  • Stage 1: Academic Qualifications: All applicants who meet the academic entry requirements will progress to stage 2.
  • Stage 2: Applicants will be ranked according to their BMAT score.
  • Stage 3: Applicants’ personal statements will be assessed for evidence of our non-academic criteria
  • Stage 4: Multiple mini-interview. No applicant will be made an offer without interview.
  • Stage 5: Fitness to practice. All applicants must have the potential to function as a fully competent doctor and fulfil the rigorous demands of professional fitness to practice

Interview Process

  • Lancaster uses a multiple-mini interview (MMI).
  • The top scoring applicants will be sent an invitation to interview in December.
  • Interviews take place in January and February.
    Offers are made in March and are solely based on the score from the MMI.

Statistics

  • There were 558 applicants in 2016, for which 113 offers were made.
  • The average BMAT score for successful applicants in 2016 was 12.0.
