UCAT Universities: Where to Apply with Good, Average and Low UCAT Scores

Jump To Section

Looking for super-effective support with your UCAT exam?

Everything you need to score highly on the UCAT in 2022.

Whether or not you’ve taken your UCAT yet, it’s important to know what each university is expecting from you as an applicant when it comes to your UCAT results.

The different medical schools within the UK use the UCAT in different ways, with some placing great importance on it and others barely even considering it. This guide will take you through each medical school that requires the UCAT, looking at how their score requirements and how the result is considered within your whole application, as well as admissions statistics from the previous years, including the Lowest UCAT Scores Accepted for Interview, Average UCAT Scores and point thresholds.

UCAT Universities

Let’s start things off with a bit of context regarding UCAT scoring. UCAT Score can generally be split into three major categories: High, Average and Low. These aren’t really official rankings, but they are generally accepted to be a good measure of how well an applicant has done in the test. We’ve ranked all of the Medical Schools in the UK based on which category they could fit in.

Below you’ll find all of these Universities, which you can click on to see their UCAT statistics and how they use the results.

Good Score UCAT Universities

Average Score UCAT Universities

Low Score UCAT Universities

UCAT Deciles

Each year, all of the results of the UCAT are rounded up and split into lots of 10%, going from the lowest to the highest. The averages of these scores make the UCAT Deciles, which can be used to measure where an individual score ranks amongst other students. Let’s take a look at the UCAT Deciles from the last 4 years:

UCAT Deciles (2020 Entry - 2023 Entry)

Decile RankingUCAT Score (2021 Entry)UCAT Score (2022 Entry)UCAT Score (2023 Entry)UCAT Score (2024 Entry)

7th2650264026602660
8th2730273027502760
9th2850285028802890

You can see here that each Decile stays pretty similar from year to year, due to the UCAT being standardised. Each Decile rank has around a 120 score difference between them.

If you’ve already taken the UCAT, you can easily find which decile you rank your result falls in by adding together your scores from the first four sections of the exam. Bear in mind that the decile rank does not take the Situational Judgment Test into account as this has a unique marking scheme. You can find out more about this in our UCAT Scoring Guide.

With these deciles, we can also categorise UCAT results into three major ranks: High (or good), Average and Low. A good UCAT score will generally be within the 7th Decile, with a score of 660 points or more per section.  An average score would be between 620-660, sitting in the middle deciles, while a low score would be considered anything below 610.

Where to Apply with a Good UCAT Score?

With a bit of context behind us, let’s start looking at each university that requires the UCAT and what they expect from their applicants. We’ll start off with universities that have higher than average UCAT Thresholds and averages amongst successful candidates.

We would call these High-Scoring Universities. If you’ve managed a get a good score on your UCAT, you may wish to consider applying to these medical schools. These may be some of the more desirable universities for you, and with a high UCAT score, your application will stand a very decent chance of success!

University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge used to use the BMAT for its admissions process but has moved to the UCAT following the cancellation of the BMAT. This came as a surprise to some as many predicted Oxford and Cambridge would create their own BMAT alternative. However, Cambridge has instead elected to go with the UCAT.

While there are no prior scores to determine what applicants should aim to achieve it can be assumed that the requirements will be high due to the competitive nature of Oxbridge admissions. With the previous BMAT results seen before, combined with the fact that Cambridge is the highest-rated medical school in the UK, we can assume that only high-scoring applicants will have a safe chance of getting an offer.

However, it’s important to consider that Cambridge traditionally does not implement cut off scores, so it’s unlikely that one will be implemented here.

University of Oxford

Oxbridge Universities are highly-known for their incredibly selective admissions process, so much like Cambridge, it’s no surprise seeing Oxford in this category.

However, the Oxford Medicine admissions process has changed in 2024 as they will be moving from the BMAT to the UCAT. It is expected that Oxford will continue to have high admissions standards for their course, meaning higher UCAT scores will be favoured.

The University of Oxford does not operate a UCAT Cut-Off Score.

However, they previously suggested that a BMAT Score of 6.0 in Sections 1 and 2 are recommended to be considered competitive.

What are some common themes between these medical schools?

Firstly, we can see that a fair amount of these universities employ UCAT Cut-off scores. This isn’t a constant between every university (as you’ll see in a bit), but getting into any of these unis will require you to hit a minimum score to be considered.

Many of these thresholds sit around the 2600 mark, weeding out any scores that are not considered high. We can also see that several of these universities have increased their thresholds over the last three years. Some have been quite gradual, like St.George’s University London, while others have been very sudden, like Keele University.

Beyond the cut-off scores, we can see that the average scores for applicants invited to interview are all within the range of good UCAT scores, sitting between 2600 and 2850. This should show you that even without an official cut-off score, all of these universities will still be looking for high UCAT scores. If you’re hoping to study at any of these medical schools, the UCAT is going to be one of the highest priorities of your application.

The best way to ensure success is through consistent practice. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will become with the exam format, and the better your chances of achieving a high score. This is where UCAT.Ninja comes in – it provides an extensive bank of 20,000 practice questions allowing you to hone your skills and gain confidence.

When you imagine universities with high requirements, you may think about the most prestigious universities in the UK, such as Oxford, Cambridge and University College London. None of these appear on this list, but that’s because they require applicants to sit the BMAT instead, another medical school admissions test. You can find out more about this test in our Definitive BMAT Guide.

Where to apply with an Average UCAT Scores

As we now know, an average UCAT score will fall between 620 and 660 per section, totalling to around 2400-2600 overall. These are the most common of the three tiers of medical school in the UK, as most universities use your score alongside other aspects of your application. Let’s take a look at where you should apply with an average UCAT Score!

Bangor University

Bangor University is the newest university in the UK, catering for medicine students in the north of Wales. Originally, Bangor was a location for Cardiff students within the north but it has now created its own independent course. Applicants for this course will be required to sit the UCAT, but there are currently no formal requirements or cut-off scores.

Bangor University does not operate a UCAT Cut-Off Score.

Brighton and Sussex Medical School

BSMS is one of the 8 medical schools that previously used the BMAT up until 2023. With it’s removal in the 2024 admissions cycle, most of the BMAT unis, including BSMS, adopted the UCAT for their admissions processes.

Previously, BSMS was unique as they scored the BMAT out of 37, with 9 marks for Section 1, 18 marks for Section 2 and 5 marks for each element of Section 3. All applicants were then ranked according to their score and invited to interview according to how many spaces were available.

While we don’t know if a similar system will be used when judging UCAT scores, we can look at the previous cut-off scores to estimate how strict their UCAT requirements may be:

  • Section 1: a score of at least 3 or higher
  • Section 2: a score of at least 6 or higher
  • Section 3: a score of at least 2.5 C or higher

University College London

UCL previously used the BMAT but has not moved to the UCAS due to the removal of the BMAT as an admissions test. UCL did not operate any formal cut-off scores for the BMAT, so it is likely that the same will be true of the UCAT.

University College London does not operate a BMAT Cut-Off Score.

There are exceptions to this, as we can see some universities have invited applicants to interview who scored in the 2100s and even 2000s. However, scores like these are only going to be acceptable if the rest of your applications is extremely strong.

As we can see, the requirements for each university can be pretty varied in this tier. The general theme here is that you’re going to need to be scoring around 2300 – 2600 to get an interview at any of these universities, provided you have a strong application to back it up.

If you want to improve your UCAT score, you can use UCAT.Ninja to get familiarised with the types and difficulty of the questions with 20,000 questions to practice at a price that fits to your budget.

One thing to note is that there is a fairly balanced mix of universities with and without cut-off scores. Of course, applicants with a score on the lower end of average will likely want to consider universities with no minimum requirement, as your application will typically rely less on your score. You’ll also need to consider your score in the Situational Judgment Test (SJT) included in the UCAT, as a fair amount of medical schools will reject any applicants who fall within Band 4.

There is one oddball on this list, The University of Exeter. You can see that the minimum scores accepted are wildly different from the average and cut-off scores presented. This is due to their tier system, which ranks international applicants and creates different entry requirements. High-tier applicants will have a high UCAT threshold to meet, while lower-tier students will not, hence why we see results in the 1800s compared to a cut-off of 2800. For UK applicants, the UCAT requirements are not as strict, so an average score will be perfectly fine for an application there.

Going into the UCAT with the attitude of getting “good enough” is never a great mindset to be in, so you should ensure you’ve prepared for the test effectively in order to get the best score you can. The effective way to prepare for the UCAT and the rest of your application is with 6med’s Complete Bundle, which provides you with resources and access to live courses that guide you through every aspect of the application process. Where Can You Apply with a Low UCAT Score?

Lastly, let’s take a look at the UCAT Universities that have lower average scores from applicants. These medical schools may be easier for some applicants to get into, but that isn’t a reflection of the quality of their teaching or facilities.

Bart's Medical School

UCAT and UCAS Tariff scores are considered in a 50/50 weighting for selection for interview.

Applicants with a UCAT score below the third decile are not considered for an interview.

As you can see, there’s not a massive selection here, which makes sense. The purpose of the UCAT is to define the skills of each applicant and help admissions teams find strong applicants for interviews. Considering how competitive medicine is at university, lower scores are unfortunately going to hinder your application.

With that being said, we can still see here that there are a few medical schools that will accept lower UCAT scores, either because they don’t place much emphasis on the UCAT or because they have generally lower entry requirements.

Cardiff University and Queen’s University Belfast fall into the former. Cardiff is very open in their use of the UCAT (or lack thereof), stating that no emphasis is placed on the results in their decision-making process. Instead, they will typically look to your personal statement and academics. Queen’s University Belfast do consider the UCAT but will only earn you up to 6 points out of 42 within their scoring process. In comparison, your GCSE results will net you up to 36 points! Therefore, this will be a great place to apply if you have strong GCSE grades.

On the other hand, The University of East Anglia actually holds fairly respectable average scores amongst offer-holders. However, their lack of a cut-off score and willingness to interview applicants with scores in the 1900s make this a great place to apply if your UCAT scores aren’t the best.

If any of these universities are where you’re hoping to study, then that’s great! You should always try to perform as well as possible in the UCAT, but your application to your dream curse won’t be ruined if you didn’t get a high UCAT score. However, if you’re UCAT score is lower, you don’t need to feel like you have to go to any of these medical schools if they don’t seem right for you. Medical School that don’t operate a cut-off score will be more considerate of the other aspects of your application, as well as your interview should you be shortlisted.

Conclusion

So, that covers all the major universities in the UK that require the UCAT for their medicine courses. The good thing about the UCAT is that it can be taken incredibly early in the admissions cycle, with testing starting in early July most years. This is long before you will need to even think about finalising your university choices, so you will be able to adjust your options according to the score you receive.

In most cases, the UCAT isn’t the be-all end-all of your application, but it’s important to take it seriously, as a low score could prevent you from getting into your top choice of medical school. A high score gives you the most amount of options for where to study and will give you a better chance of earning an interview.

Preparing for the UCAT can be difficult, as it’s not really a test you can revise for in. a traditional sense.
